Physiotherapist or Assistant: Understanding Who Provides Your Care

A clinic appointment can involve more than one person. Knowing each person's role helps you understand who makes decisions about your care and who to speak with when something changes. The title physiotherapy assistant describes a different role from physiotherapist; it should not be treated as an interchangeable name.
Assessment and assigned care are different jobs
The College of Physiotherapists of Ontario explains that assistants cannot assess or reassess patients. A physiotherapist assesses the patient and develops the treatment plan. An assistant may help deliver care assigned by that physiotherapist, who remains responsible for the assignment. Consent is required for assistant involvement.
This distinction gives you a useful question: “Is this appointment an assessment by a physiotherapist, or a session involving care assigned to an assistant?” Ask before booking if the appointment label is unclear. Neither a clinic uniform nor the length of an appointment tells you the person's professional role.
Make the people behind the plan clear
Ask for the name of the physiotherapist responsible for your plan and the role of anyone else involved. You can also ask which parts of an appointment they expect an assistant to help with. You do not need to understand every technical term before requesting a plain-language explanation.
- Who will assess or reassess me?
- What work would the assistant be assigned?
- How can I speak to the physiotherapist about a concern?
- What happens if my circumstances change before the next visit?
Raise changes with the right person
If you have a new question about the plan, tell the person working with you and ask how it will reach the physiotherapist. Avoid assuming that every staff member has received information you gave during another appointment. A brief note in your own words can help you explain what changed and what you would like clarified; it is not a substitute for reassessment.
For example, asking “Who should review this change?” is more useful than trying to decide yourself which parts of a plan should be altered. You can also ask how the clinic communicates between appointments and whether a separate appointment is needed to discuss the issue.
Consent includes understanding the arrangement
If you are uncertain about assistant involvement, say so before that part of care begins. Ask what alternatives the clinic can offer, including any effect on appointment availability or fees. This article does not establish that Apex uses assistants. Confirm the staffing arrangement directly when discussing physiotherapy at Apex Performance & Health in Mississauga. Questions and answers
Can an assistant perform my physiotherapy reassessment?
No. The Ontario regulator says assistants cannot assess or reassess patients; ask which physiotherapist will handle that part of your care.
Does consent always mean a separate form?
Do not assume that a particular form is the whole consent process. Ask how assistant involvement is explained and how your decision will be recorded.
