Ankle sprains

A rolled ankle deserves more than ice and time.

The short answer

An ankle sprain involves injury to the ligaments supporting the ankle. An ankle injury may need medical assessment before rehabilitation. Rehabilitation, when appropriate, progresses according to the injury, existing instructions and response.

What is usually going on

Sprains are common in court and field sports and on uneven ground. After a sprain the ankle’s sense of position can stay reduced, which is why rehab focuses on balance and control, not just the ligament.

How we treat it

Assessment informs the next step and whether medical evaluation is needed. Once rehabilitation is appropriate, discuss movement, strength and balance goals and the criteria for reviewing progress.

Common questions

What people ask us most about ankle sprains.

Should I ice a sprained ankle?

Ice can help with comfort early on. What matters more is protected, gradual movement and a proper rehab program as it settles.
