Sciatica

Pain that travels from the back into the leg deserves a careful assessment.

The short answer

Sciatica describes pain that radiates from the lower back or buttock down the back of the leg, usually because a nerve root in the lower spine is irritated — often by a disc. Many cases settle with conservative care such as manual therapy, nerve-friendly exercise and activity guidance.

What is usually going on

Leg pain, tingling or numbness can have different possible causes. Describe where symptoms occur and how they change rather than assuming that all leg symptoms come from the spine.

How we treat it

History and examination help guide next steps, including medical referral when indicated. A precise structure is not always identified. Ask what the findings support and how the response to care will be reviewed.
