Shoulder pain

From throwers and swimmers to lifters and parents carrying toddlers.

The short answer

Shoulder pain can arise from different conditions. Assessment helps determine whether modified activity, rehabilitation or medical investigation is appropriate. Do not assume a painful shoulder is a tendon problem or push through training before understanding significant symptoms.

What is usually going on

Shoulder pain often shows up when reaching overhead, sleeping on the side, or throwing. It can come from overuse, a sudden load, or gradual weakness. Our clinicians have a particular interest in rotational and overhead athletes.

How we treat it

History, strength and movement assessment help guide the plan and any need for medical investigation. Discuss which activities are appropriate and how changes will be reviewed.

Common questions

What people ask us most about shoulder pain.

Should I stop training with shoulder pain?

The answer depends on the cause and severity. Ask whether to pause or modify training; do not assume that continuing through pain is appropriate.
